Student Mentoring Program The goal of the Student Mentoring Program to develop future leaders and contributors to the Special Libraries community by offering to students the expertise and assistance of current information professionals. The Program is free, a benefit of membership in the Florida and Caribbean Chapter. If you are not currently a member, you may join by completing the form at http://www.sla.org/content/membership/joinsla/index.cfm. (Student Membership is $35 yearly). How Will These Be Accomplished? Students will be paired with professionals who will share their knowledge, skills, goals, and attitudes that have contributed to their success as an LIS professional. This creative collaboration will enable the mentor and the student to assess together the potential strengths and weaknesses the developing student may exhibit. Benefits of This Program: Interested students will have the opportunity to develop personal contacts with established professionals who are in the library and information field and who are working in environments the student would also like to explore and possibly work in upon graduation. Students will have a safe and comfortable working relationship with their mentor that will offer them an environment in which they will feel free to ask the mentor questions and or concerns that pertain to the LIS profession. The mentor in turn will then offer guidance, suggestions, and solutions to the student. Mentors and students will develop their own partnership goals for their relationship. These goals will be uniquely tailored to the student's specific desires and needs. How Long Will the Program Last? Mentoring relationships will last as long as the participants choose. A student may be mentored more than once. Mentoring can take place in person, by phone, by e-mail, or through a combination of these methods.

Virtual Book Group The Virtual Book Group Program is designed to add educational opportunity to members without attending a chapter workshop. So many new books are published that it is hard to find the time to read them, but the book group might provide incentive as well as a forum to discuss the books and related topics with other information professionals. Since so many workshops focus on technical topics the virtual book group allows the chapter to explore other non-technical topics such as management and marketing. Possible books are posted with descriptions on the chapter’s internet site, using SurveyMonkey; the members have an opportunity to select the book and date of the virtual meeting. An announcement is made to the chapter. The virtual meeting takes place using conference call technology at the agreed upon time. Virtual Book Group Blog
